- Trim and remove any stray threads from underneath so that they will not show through light colored fabric.
- Make sure all seams are pressed in desired direction. Thorough pressing from the front can really make a difference.
- If your top is pieced to the edge or the border has many pieces stay stitch ¼” around all the edges to secure seams. Make sure seams are stay stitched in proper pressing direction.
- Make sure borders lay flat and fit correctly, wavy borders need to be fixed prior to quilting as puckers and tucks can not be quilted out.
- Square up your quilt top. (if your quilt has a scalloped edge wait to cut the scalloped edge after the quilt is quilted, mark on the quilt top were the scallop edge will be)
- No buttons, pins or embellishments. These should be added after quilting.
- Please be sure that the quilt is free from odors, pet hair and dirt etc. My studio is Smoke Free and I appreciate working on quilts that are also odor free and clean.
Quilt Back
- Back needs to be 4 to 6 inches larger than the quilt top on all 4 sides.
- Bed sheets are not recommended for quilt backs. They lead to a poor quality finished quilt.
- The back should be squared and pressed.
- If the back is pieced, be sure to trim selvages off. Use 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch seam and press the seam open to reduce bulk.
Batting
- Batting should be 4 to 6 inches larger than the quilt top on all 4 sides.
- I prefer to work with cotton batting or cotton/poly blend because it works best with the machine.
- NO WOOL BATTING. I AM ALLERGIC TO IT.
